We did a blind taste test against the store tub and this Cookies & Cream Gelato from the Ninja Creami won, which my wife refused to admit out loud but her empty bowl said plenty. The base is denser than regular ice cream, real gelato territory, and the crushed cookies go in on the mix-in spin so they stay in chunks instead of turning to mud. Crush them by hand and leave some big pieces. Tiny crumbs disappear and you lose the crunch. First spin always looks rough, milk splash and re-spin fixes it.

Tip: freeze the pint on a level shelf for a full 24 hours. If the first spin looks crumbly, add a splash of milk and run Re-spin.

Ingredients

  • Whole Milk1.25 cup
  • Heavy Cream0.5 cup
  • Granulated Sugar0.5 cup
  • Egg Yolks3 whole
  • Vanilla Extract1 tsp
  • Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, Brokenoptional4 whole

Directions

  1. 1Warm the milk and cream until steaming.
  2. 2Whisk the egg yolks with the sugar until pale, then temper with a little hot dairy.
  3. 3Return to the pan and cook gently to 165-175F, then stir in the vanilla.
  4. 4Strain, cool completely, pour into a Creami pint under the max line, and freeze flat for 24 hours.
  5. 5Spin on the GELATO preset, Re-spinning with a splash of milk if crumbly.
  6. 6Add the broken cookies to a center well and run the Mix-In program before serving.
