Okay so the whole reason I made this Birthday Cake Milkshake was because my daughter turned eight and refused actual birthday cake, which, fine, whatever. I threw the base together the night before, let the Ninja Creami do its freezing thing overnight, and spun it the next afternoon. Came out creamy, thick, tastes exactly like the funfetti batter you sneak off the spoon. Practical tip: sift the dry cake mix before blending it into the base or you'll get little flour lumps that survive the spin cycle. She had two glasses and then asked if we could skip cake every year.
How it spins
Tip: freeze the pint on a level shelf for a full 24 hours. If the first spin looks crumbly, add a splash of milk and run Re-spin.
Ingredients
- Whole Milk1.25 cup
- Vanilla Ice Cream0.5 cup
- White Cake Mix2 tbsp
- Vanilla Extract0.5 tsp
- Granulated Sugar1 tbsp
- Rainbow Sprinklesoptional2 tbsp
Directions
- 1Whisk the milk, softened ice cream, dry cake mix, vanilla, and sugar until completely smooth.
- 2Pour the base into a Creami pint, keeping it at or below the max-fill line.
- 3Set the pint flat in the freezer and freeze for 24 hours until completely solid.
- 4Lock the frozen pint into the Creami and run the MILKSHAKE preset.
- 5If the result looks crumbly, add a splash of milk and run Re-spin until smooth.
- 6Top with rainbow sprinkles and serve immediately.
Tips
- Freeze the pint completely flat and level so it freezes evenly, not tilted, which ensures the Creami can process it into creamy texture instead of crumbly bits.
- If your mixture comes out powdery after spinning, add a small splash of whole milk and re-spin immediately to break up the ice crystals.
- Let the frozen pint sit at room temperature for 2-3 minutes before inserting into the Creami if it feels rock hard, just enough to soften the surface slightly for easier spinning.
Variations
- Chocolate Birthday Cake: Replace vanilla extract with chocolate extract and add 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder to the milk mixture before freezing.
- Strawberry Swirl: Puree 1/2 cup fresh or thawed strawberries, strain out seeds, and swirl into the milk mixture just before pouring into the pint container.
- Funfetti Style: Use confetti cake mix instead of white cake mix and stir in sprinkles right before pouring into the pint to freeze.
FAQ
- Can I use a different type of ice cream flavor?
- Yes, any vanilla or cake-flavored ice cream works here; just melt it and mix it with the other ingredients as directed, then freeze flat and spin.
- What if my pint didn't freeze solid after 24 hours?
- Make sure your freezer is cold enough (0 degrees F or below) and that the pint is sitting flat on a level surface; if still soft, leave it another 8-12 hours before spinning.
- Can I make this lighter or lower in calories?
- Swap the whole milk for 2% milk and use a light or sugar-free vanilla ice cream, which will still freeze and spin into a creamy result in the Creami.
- How long can I store the frozen pint before spinning?
- Keep the frozen pint in the freezer for up to 2 weeks; after that, freezer burn can affect taste and texture when you spin it.
