Best Protein Powder for Ninja Creami (What Freezes Right and What Doesn't)
By Marty Cole Β· May 2, 2026
I've made the same Ninja Creami protein chocolate pint with four different protein powders and gotten four completely different results. Same recipe, same freeze time, same everything except the powder. One came out genuinely creamy, two came out decent, and one came out grainy and strange no matter how many times I re-spun it.
Protein powder type matters more than most people realize when it comes to the Creami. Here's what I've figured out.
Why the powder type changes the result
Most protein powders are 70-90% protein by weight with sweeteners, thickeners, and flavorings making up the rest. The base protein type changes how the pint freezes.
Whey protein concentrate is the most common and generally works well. It has a small amount of fat from the concentrate process, which helps. Whey isolate is leaner and can push results slightly icier. Both are fine in the right ratio.
Casein protein is the gold standard for Creami pints. Casein forms a thick gel when mixed with liquid, and that gel freezes into a dense, creamy texture rather than an icy one. Pints made with casein come out noticeably smoother than whey-only pints. The tradeoff is that casein doesn't dissolve as easily -- blend it more aggressively and use warm liquid.
Whey-casein blends (sustained-release proteins, nighttime proteins) split the difference and are my practical first recommendation. You get most of the creaminess benefit from the casein with the easier mixing of whey.
Plant-based proteins vary a lot. Pea protein is the safest choice -- neutral flavor, freezes reasonably well. Rice protein is lighter and can go icy. Hemp has an earthy taste that shows up in the finished pint and either works for you or it doesn't.
The sweetener is probably the problem
This is the thing I wish someone had told me earlier. Protein powders sweetened with erythritol -- and a lot of the "zero sugar" powders use it -- make Creami pints crumbly and grainy, and no amount of re-spinning fully fixes it. Erythritol crystallizes at low temperatures. It's not your technique, it's the sweetener.
Powders sweetened with stevia, monk fruit, or allulose freeze much better. If your pints keep coming out gritty or crumbly and you've already tried all the usual fixes (full freeze time, re-spin, milk splash), look at the sweetener panel on your powder.
What I actually use and recommend
My Classic Chocolate Protein Ice Cream and Creamy Vanilla Bean Protein Ice Cream are built to work with most whey or casein powders. They're forgiving recipes, good for testing a new powder.
My Peanut Butter Cup Protein Ice Cream and Banana Cream Protein Ice Cream both have enough fat from peanut butter or banana to cushion a slightly lower-quality powder. If you're trying a new powder and want the deck stacked in your favor, make one of these.
My Cookies & Cream Protein Ice Cream and Birthday Cake Protein Ice Cream are lighter flavor profiles without a strong fat source to hide issues. These are where bad protein powder shows up most clearly. Worth saving for a powder you've already tested and trust.
The Fairlife shortcut
My Fairlife Chocolate Shake Ice Cream is the laziest and most reliable protein Creami pint I make. Pour a Fairlife protein shake into a pint container, freeze, spin. The filtered milk protein concentrate in Fairlife freezes beautifully -- creamy, not icy, no sweetener issues, 30g of protein. If you want a high-protein pint without thinking about powder ratios, this is it.
One scoop only
Two scoops of protein powder in a 16 oz pint is a common mistake. More than one scoop in a small liquid base makes the pint dense, chewy, and strange -- and it's harder on the Creami motor. One scoop of good powder in a well-formulated base is the ceiling. Get your protein elsewhere and let the ice cream be ice cream.
